July 2005 - Patch up When I first purchased the Ka, the one side had faded, with it being red it doesn’t take much. So my Dad and I had done some spraying before, so set about prepping it for a full re-spray. Whilst we were doing this, the usual rust spots were found, them being; the tops of the sill inside the door opening, around the petrol cap, and bottom of the wings. With money being tight, we thought it would be best to just sand down the surface, kurust the areas and filler them to create a smooth finish.
Below are the pictures of the final outcome:
Not bad considering it was sprayed on the driveway, (not
with rattle cans though) As predicted 12 months down the line the worst areas of corrosion had just started to bubble through, so after debating whether to keep the ka or get an oil burner as I will be going to University at the end of the summer and intend to come home at weekends, so 150 mile round trip every week minimum. After doing some sums, it became apparent that it wouldn’t be a worthwhile change. So I came to the conclusion that I might as well restore her. So the parts that needed to be replaced were:
Below are some pictures of it stripped down ready to go to the body shop for new panels:
Most people wouldn’t have bothered to replace the panels but I want my Ka to be perfect. Its back from the bodyshop a little later than planned but the work is good, and I am more than impressed.
New near side sill
New near side wing
New off side wing
New off side sill New petrol cap surround The next job was to get the paint, on, first I needed to strip the interior and remove the door and bonnet, oh and wire up the alarm.
The different colour paint under the petrol cap etc. is primer, as we sanded down to bare metal to get a smooth finish. The rest of the car is painted in high build primer, to remove any imperfections.
The one side now had red on
The main shell is now fully painted :D
Also managed to get my wheels refurbed, they are fiesta flight alloys painted the same black as the ka's roof.
Its finally finished, and it passed its MOT today, I have also waxoyled the complete underside, to protect it from the road salt etc.. and have injected wax into the box sections like the sills.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ October 2006 Just some updated photos, of my new aero wipers and mud flaps fitted ready for the winter
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ February 2007 Well the new interior is in, all black, and from a 6
month old ka, with the facelift dash.
After:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 2007 Well I was never really happy with my 14" alloys, then I saw some pictures that moondustka3 (off myka.org) had put up of his ka with st24 mondeo alloys on and thought I had to do it, so got some and refurbished them as shown below:
Sanded to bare metal
Scuffs filled in with chemical metal, and then the whole alloy etched
The finished item with centre cap
With tyres fitted 195/40/R16 As the wheels are bigger I knew I would need to lower it after sending many pm's to moondustka3, I went for weitec coilovers:
As the whole suspension was going to change, I got some
new lower font wishbones as my old ones had worn bushes, also took the
rear beam off and got that sandblasted and painted satin black, with new
bushes.
And also when browsing ebay these appeared and i Just had to have them (the seats)
half way through the suspension:
and the finished item, well interior wise, depending on whether I want a spoiler
